Positive-Attitude Coachability is the willingness to learn. Whether you are in the professional arena or the sporting field, you can only advance in your field if you are able to continually learn. In the context of personal improvement, your coachability quotient refers to how much you can learn from others without letting restraints like your ego hold you back from assimilating information. You can only learn and improve yourself if you are coachable. This trait is not something that can be learnt from books and classes. Instead, coachability is gained through a change in perspective, or a change in heart. Those who are naturally coachable usually have certain personality traits or characteristics that make them malleable and open-minded. Open-mindedness is important in order to receive any kind of information without bias and to learn from it. So is the ability to listen with the intent to learn. But there are five specific traits that can make a difference to how well you receive knowledge from trainers. Coachability traits Faith: Probably the most important asset that a coachable individual can have is faith in the coach. It can be difficult sometimes to overcome our egos and stoop to the role of pupil. But this false pride can be even more fatal to progress than an incompetent teacher. Therefore it is always important to have faith in the coach, though this doesn’t mean that prospective teachers may not be screened for the best suited mentor. Humility: In order to have faith in another person, humility is necessary. Humility teaches us that there are things we need a teacher for, as there are things we cannot do on our own. It induces us to bring about a positive change in our behavior and be more receptive to the experiences and wisdom of others. A willingness to act: Without determination to learn and positive action on our part, we cannot expect to find the right teacher for us. Therefore coachability demands an action bias. Disinterested sense of purpose: Pure knowledge evades those who seek it with selfish interests. Seeking wisdom for the sake of wisdom is the purpose that a coachable individual needs to have. If making money through that knowledge or using the teacher as a launch pad for one’s career is the goal, then there are impure conditions being added to the training. This cannot result in true receptiveness to the knowledge imparted by the teacher. Willingness to give up control: Finally, a coachable person is one who is willing to forsake control for the sake of knowledge. Often, we unknowingly put our mentors in difficult positions by expecting results in exchange for control. In other words, we place restraints on our relationship with our mentors, leading to close-mindedness. Learning to give up control without the expectation of results is one of the first steps to gaining productive wisdom. Coachibility demands a suppression of the ego and a lowering of defenses. Pride and ego are the biggest obstacles to learning and they must be completely suppressed in order for wisdom to enter.
